Can You Help

Ui Church is an important historical building in the history of the Hebrides. Please help us protect this ancient building by restoring it and bringing it back from obscurity.  There is so much we still have to learn about our past and the history of our islands. We already know that it is the burial site of MacLeod Clan Chiefs, the 5th Earl of Seaforth and just as importantly, ordinary villagers. Ui Church is also listed on the St Columba's trail, but what other secrets are waiting to be discovered and by whom

Aiginis

When day is over and life is done

Mine eyes have closed and my strength has gone,

O westwards take me and quietly lay me

In Aignish graveyard beside the sea.

There please leave me by kith and kin

By parents kindly and all my friends,

By white waves pounding on beaches sounding

By Aignish graveyard beside the sea.

For generations the people of the islands have ventured far and wide, nowadays it's easy enough for islanders to 'come home' to visit, or to keep in touch. Past generations of sons and daughters probably had little option, but left out of neccesity, they knew they would never return, it broke hearts and tore both families and communities apart.  The echo of their love and grief at the loss for these islands is carried across the generations in poems, songs and stories. It still touches the hearts of islanders today as stories are told of those who left and were never heard of again.

Visitors arrive, often they are Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, they ask 'Did you know?' or 'Have you heard of?' with hope in their heart to find family left, circles completed, or maybe a need to touch that which was lost

Help us leave a legacy for future generations, no matter where in the world they reside, so they might trace their past back through our efforts in preserving their history for the future.
